This medium is for the final layer of a painting. It is slow-drying and flexible, which keeps the painting on the right side of the fat-over-lean rule, so each new layer stays at least as flexible as the one beneath it. Use Painting Medium #1 for the earliest layers and Painting Medium #2 for the ones in between.

Stick with gum turpentine for the solvent here too. Odorless mineral spirits are a lower-odor substitute, but turpentine evaporates faster and leaves no mineral residue behind.
How to prepare
- Weigh out all the ingredients ahead of time.
- Stir the beeswax into the turpentine and let it dissolve.
- Add the oils and mix well.
- Strain the mixture if needed, since beeswax can carry small impurities.
Store tightly sealed in a cool, dark place. If your mix contains wax, it can settle over time, so shake well before use.
